In addition to our regularly held meetings on alternating Wednesdays, GbMMS coordinates other social activities, for men and sometimes their families. This creates a spectrum of support and possibilities of networking with our community. These activities are complementary to the social events offered through the larger Gay Fathers’ Association organization.
DINNERS
Before each meeting, attendees are invited to dine together as a group. All are welcome, but joining us for dinner is not a prerequisite to attending a meeting. The location of the meal varies each meeting. Currently, the facilitator of the group takes responsibility for selecting the restaurant and making a group reservation. The intent has been to support gay-owned or gay-friendly restaurants and eateries around the Capitol Hill area near the Group Health facility where the meetings are held. The diners gather at 6:00 p.m.
SOCIAL HOUR
Following the meeting, there is a social hour. This is optional but provides an opportunity for conversation and the building of camaraderie. Some people who no longer attend the formal meetings will meet up with the group at this social hour.
POTLUCKS
In addition, various members often sponsor a social gathering either in their home or some facility to which they have access. Generally, these are organized as potluck gatherings. They can involve watching movies, playing parlor games, and conversation. While they can be related to some event such as the Oscars or New Year’s Eve, they can also just be offered because someone wants to host a social event. These events are sometimes meant to include families, and other times they are intended for just the “Guys”.
TRIPS
Recently a group of the GbMMS went on a weekend trip to Portland. The intent was to sample the gay culture in another city in a group setting. Attendees left late on Friday and returned on Sunday. The experience was so successful, the group decided it should become an annual event, alternating between Vancouver, B.C., and Portland.
EVENTS
The social events are open, fluid, and fairly spontaneous. Any member can propose and host optional events. Many steadfast friends have been made in the group. In every sense of the word, we are a family of men supporting each other’s definition of family and home. We will be in the Pride parade this year and are working on a float with the Gay Fathers of Seattle.
